Johan Dahlroth's Black Weekend #1 : Hedemora Blues / Release date: 090909 Saturday, September 5, 2009 |

Dalarnas djupa skogar. Två dygn i upplösningstillstånd.

Episkt!

Money - or the lack of it. It's weird when you don't have any . . . I've hade negative amounts on my account for quite a while, then yesterday, when I was doing laundry, a friend called me and asked for my help for some promo photos for a local newspaper.

Sure thang! Too bad we only had like ten minutes to get them done (one of the two was working so he couldn't leave the store, the other one's girlfriend is soon giving birth). But, we found an alley in a hurry and started shooting. I quickly started to miss and curse my stolen lens (which was much more light-sensitive.) It was so dark and I didn't want to use a flash which meant choosing between either extremely long exposure times or very high ISO-numbers.. we were going nowhere fast and of course they turned out like shit. I felt a bit ashamed (but got paid more than I've had for quite some time). (fat glossy note with big bold letters to myself: 1. Sleep the night before a photo shoot. 2. Eat. 3. Take a deep breath and take your time)

Suddenly me and D were dining at a fancy restaurant and drinking free beer (he was playing records later and I was gonna take pictures). Shooting Spires were playing this evening and since they stayed at the hotel we sat down with them (B.J. and his girlfriend and Johan from Fritz's Corner).

Very few people came for the the performance (which btw was awesome and a new experience to me since I never had heard him/them before (he was touring solo)) we had a blast hanging out with them (those Brooklyn fellas were super nice!), drinking free beer, snapping some pictures etc..

What I'm aiming at here is that I got paid like maybe around 600 skr which these days would be a shit lot considering, but at the same time this was money I kinda had to spend (since half of it was beer for taking pictures of the band etc) and the other half for the promo shot earlier (which should cover dinner + a few drinks). I could even treat a friend for a beer and surprisingly enough found some cash in my pockets when I woke up today. Money is meant for spending!

One we didn't use.

Shooting Spires

Some other noteworthy things:
*Johanna managed to get an old CREEP on crutches thrown out (he was a total asshole).
*I got some free shots from a dude who had bought some for him and his friend but couldn't drink them because they traumatically reminded him of the horrible medicine he got as a child when treated for ear inflammation.
*Recieved some good news that I might be sponsored for a new external hard drive.

blod och svärd season premiere Friday, February 6, 2009 |

According to Daniel "Bonden" Astgren (one half of the club's two founders), panic allmost arose one hour prior to opening. The promised smoke machine had started to malfunction, merely coughing puny anticosmic farts rather than deliverering the horrorish graveyard mist one might expect from a season premiere of Swedens finest metal club; Blod & Svärd.

Last years season finale was a great success, with many recurring attendees and guest DJ E from Watain (which by the end of the night resulted in the whole band lining up) behind the turntables. Special guest of this evening was no other than Tyrant from Nifelheim. All in all, it turned out a great success, lots of smiling faces, one of the best bartenders in town and a variety of people (plus the smoke machine delivered). Between chugging beer and garlic shots I managed to snap a few photos. The rest of them can be found at Blod & Svärds myspace, which can be found here (soon).

how's yr black meetaal? (black metal 4 dummies, seriously) |

HOW'S YOUR BLACK METAL?

MAYHEM
Ordo Ad Chao
SEASON OF MIST

DARKTHRONE
F.O.A.D.
PEACEVILLE

WATAIN
Sworn to the Dark
SEASON OF MIST

Norwegian black metal legends Mayhem talk the talk but they also walk the walk. Almost cursed with a violent past much equivalent to their music, they have paved their way into the great hall of metal. A brief history would come in place here.

During the early nineties a bunch Norwegian teenage metal heads were beginning to define their own music sound and scene. Their homebase were located around Mayhem's founder "Euronymous'" (Øystein Aarseth) local record shop (later also their own record label) in Oslo, Norway ("a dark and repressed country full of high mountains and cold forests" -Erlend Erichsen, Drummer of Gorgoroth). The record shop was called Helvete and it would prove that it came to fit the genre perfectly. New bands were forming and three of those genredefining (and defying) bands were Mayhem, Burzum and Darkthrone.

In the beginning the music was very lo-fi sounding. Probably as a result of low recording budgets and a do-it-yourself attitude rather than some elaborate planning by the hands of some genius producer. Production-wise the bass was very rolled off (barely noticable), the guitars were extremely trebley (the mids almost absent) and the vocals was the most harshest one could possibly imagine. Highpitched screaming over, tempo wise - ultra fast blastbeat drums and distorted minor chord and diminished scales. I must put emphasis on the vocal style. This distinctant new way of singing differed very much from the low, growling and grunting style of death metal vocalists. Lyrical themes were narrowed down to anti-religious blaspheming, satan worshipping, nature romanticising and general evil, chaos, destruction and misantrophy.

Stage props - blood, inverted pentagrams, skulls, rotting animals and blood were controversial, but not all new. What they discovered would really separate them from all the other trash and death metal bands were the noticeable corpse paint. Black and white make-up, sometimes accentuated with blood. General imagery contained overheavily use of, swords, daggers, leather, armor, spikes and weaponry etc. Like a mixture of heavy metal, medieval and goth - a luciferian brute force. All of the above mentioned, created a rather haunting and gruesome atmosphere to say the least. Or to qoute "Euronymous": "We are inspired by our hatred towards humanity, life, goodness and happiness."

Mayhem, or the true Mayhem as they called themselves were among those few who pave the way. But as Mayhem and its members always walked the left hand path, that pathway was filled with blood. By the time of their debut album (preceeded by two demo cassettes and one ep, Deathcrush) two of their founding members were dead. Pelle "Dead" Ohlin found dead as a result of blowing his head off with a shotgun (a picture of that tragic event would eventually decorate the cover for the Dawn of the Black Hearts bootleg. Band members and some friends allegedly recieved pieces of his cranium as necklaces. The other, "Euronymous" (Øystein Aarseth, guitarist and owner of Helvete) was stabbed to death by bassplayer "Count Grishnackh", more commonly known (for three church burnings) as Varg Vikernes (he was sentenced to 21 years in prison and is seeking parole in April this year).

However, 1994 saw the light of the release of De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, an epic, groundbreaking work of art, still considered as a, if not the black metal masterpiece. Note to self: an explanation to why the basslevels are so low may come from the fact that the parents of the murdered Euronymus, didn't want the album to feature the bass playing of their sons murderer (Varg Vikernes). Drummer "Hellhammer" had promised he himself would re-record the bass parts, but instead he just lowered them.) One of the most noticeable things about De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas was its vocals and vocalist - an Hungarian madman trained in both opera and Mongolian throat singing, invited after their original singers suicide. Enter Attila. Enter Mayhem 2007. The black circle is now completed.

On Mayhems latest album, Ordo Ad Chao, a rather much more planned and less rushed effort than 2004´s Chimera, Attila sounds possessed. He howls, snarls, moans, shrieks and utters other most disturbing guttural sounds ever witnessed by mankind. Ordo Ad Chao sets new standards for black metal, and for music in general. Interwining elements of chaos; stop-start guitar riffing, sinister guitar melodies, hysteric drum-blasting, just the next second passing into an atmospheric landscape of ambience - just to let all hell break loose the next second. The first song A Wise Birthgiver is among the sickest I have ever heard. Not much like your everyday sing-along-in-the-car-tune - very loose in structure, alluring the listener to a dead end back alley as visioned in a nightmare. It actually takes like a minute or so into this first song before you recognize that there is actually vocals present. At the first listen, it's more like that of a skin of the most frigthening sounds you'll hear in a long time, but just as if you peel through the skin there's an endless abyss of horrifying chaos crawling towards the light, aching to surface.

Gylve "Fenriz" Nagell & "Nocturno Culto" keeps digging far and wide in their old crates of vinyl. Old crust punks and trash metal heads shake hands, lits a pocket rocket and toast with tankards of blood. Gone are corpse paint, dungeons, crypts and bonfires. Instead; Clear Eyes, peaceful walks in the forests, insane Marshall distortion and occasional falsetto shrieks.

Darkthrone has went further down history lane with their latest album F.O.A.D. (Fuck Off And Die). It's been quite a while since their glory days with releases such as Transilvanian Hunger, A Blaze in the Northern Sky and Under A Funeral Moon. Nevertheless, Darkthrone doesn't fail to impress the listener. F.O.A.D. is a natural progression on the road they've been heading on recent albums. Still necro, but with elements of punk and trashmetal thrown in. In fact, it doesn't surprise me the least. This is a result of one of the most stubborn bands in the world, searching for their roots, and giving gratitude to their inspirations. It's an uncompromising refusal to conform to other peoples standards and expectations. The hedonists from hell gives the middlefinger to all and everyone.

Plagued by a certain narrowmindness, considering what and who is trve to the scene, many bands gets accused of foul play when flirting or appearing in the general media. It's a common (misunderstanding?) that the underground shall belong in the sewers, not on billboards on skyscrapes. Erik Danielsson, singer of Stockholm based trio Watain is of another opinion. He believes the so called media hype is only positive. When appearing in the Scandinavian Vice mag, he stated that black metal "should be like a bottomless pit filled with blind dogs devouring their own feces" - something that may have reduced possible record sales. Though, climbing towards accolades and glitter, these underground blasphemers will soon break it big judging from raving reviews from both tours and albums. Watain's third studio outburst, Sworn to the Dark is in a sense much like their self-proclaimed agenda - black metal magic as its finest. Crisp production, really strong melodies, and infurios blaspheming gives this unholy trinity a run for 2007's black metal album of the year.

It's horns up right from the start. Legions of the Black Light kicks off this album like a roundkick in Jesus balls. Followed by Satan's Hunger, Withersins and Storm of the Antichrist. Watain are not afraid to draw inspiration from various sources. Whatever it takes to get the end result leaves the listener enriched with hints of Slayer and early death metal acts. The lyrics are very well written, above the other black metal rubbish. Though clearly marking their ode to the dark majesty, the lyrics concerns depicts a much deeper and wider palette of infernality. Watain shows their allegiance and preaches the dark hymns, with such sincerity and total obedience that it literally scares me. It especially culminates on the epic title track Sworn to the Dark.

Watain's perfected black metal aesthetics puts shame to the game for all the other impostors. Makes them almost look like choirboys. Like their infamous live shows, where magic and death is ritualized ad infinitum, and the utilization of their trademark blood cannons - sending cascades of rancid blood from pigs over the headbanging crowd. The reek of putrefaction usually separates the grain from the chaff (or the flesh from the bones of you may), resulting in half of the audience immediately leaving the room - to vomit (!). The other half, standing soaked in blood having the time of their life.

There you have it. But if you don't like your metal like your coffee . . . well for all you club kids out there, word on the street is that 2008 will be the year of no rules whatsoever. Genres and styles will be mixed like drinks on a payday. Rumour is that some Bmore (Baltimore club) acts is already choppin' up early Burzum records to make new cuts! But that's a whole other story.

ARAKI - Self. Life. Death. (Kulturhuset 07.10.24)

Life by Leica

Yoko i katten Chiro.
